The Going Greener Committee at the APJCC Preschool is a joint initiative amongst preschool families and administrators working together to be more environmentally-conscious in our program. Past projects within this initiative have included the purchase of stainless steel dishes and utensils for every classroom, vastly reducing our use of single-use plastics for things like cooking projects, holiday celebrations, Shabbat snack-times, and beyond. Additionally, this committee sourced and purchased non-toxic living plants for our preschool lobby, bringing the beauty of nature within our walls.
This year, the Going Greener Committee drew inspiration from local Buy Nothing™ groups’ efforts to reduce waste and rehome goods. Beginning in February 2025, the committee has organized monthly swaps in the preschool lobby during which parents can donate and freely claim themed children’s items over a three-day window. So far, we’ve enjoyed themes like, “Winter Weather Wear,” and “Children’s Costumes,” and look forward to future themes including toys, small children’s household goods like changing pads or rockers, and beyond! These swaps provide a convenient and accessible opportunity for families to pass on things they no longer need while finding comfort in the fact that their pre-loved item will find new life in the home of a community member, rather than in a landfill.
